Villefranche
and Helen Arrives for her cruise |
|
I arrived Villefranche, a deep bay and much recommeded to me, and anchored just off the old Fort between the old port and the Marina, almost the perfect spot though enevitably some wash from the numerous 'grockle' boats. The backdrop from Walkaway was wonderful.

The town is particularly attractive and you can see why you get the recommendation to come here. These are scenes of the waterfront, full of the normal selection of Bars, Cafes and Restaurants. |
|
And here is Helen soon after arriving in the most expensive taxi in the world. 30 Euros (about £20) for a 2 mile journey from Nice ..... France is expensive but that was ridiculous. However there is nothing like that first 'Cafe au Lait' to create that holiday feeling.

|
Next day we explored the town and its castle. Here
is Walkaway seemingly the target!!! |
And to celebrate we eat out in one of the small street restaruants that abound in holiday ports in France

This part of France is very much part of Helen's childhood and the first 'find' was this small chapel in Villefrance. La Chapelle de St Pierre was decorated by the playwright Jean Cocteau in 1957 and given to the local fishermen (sadly we were not allowed to take pictures). It was covered with simply outlined figures traced in geometrical fashion using local costumes for the images with each fresco telling a fisherman's story. Helen was really thrilled to find it as she had heard about it when she lived in France and had always wanted to see it - a real bonus.
