Cala Spalmatore

Lulled into a false sense of security by the protection of Puerto Cervo with the protection of the East Coast of Sardina, I started heading West through the Bonefacio Straits. The prevailing wind is North West and blows daily at Force 5 or above. I was therefore content to anchor in Cala Spalmatore, just south of Porto Massimo off the Island of La Maddalena itself. Cala Spalmatore is a beautiful, and beautifully protected anchorage from the prevailing wind. Great rock structures, sandy bottom with good holding and a very pretty little bay; almost exclusive with few facilities ashore. Mid July and I had it to myself that night!

Here I met, for the first and last time, the local La Maddalena Island's warden; or so they indicated! The demanded dues which I have no objection to paying, took a 20 Euro note, the smallest denomination I had, promised to come back in 10 minutes with the change and were never seen again. I am still trying to work out if it was a straight sting or whether they were dishonest officials. Still it did not take away the enjoyment of this Cala which is strongly recommended as a sheltered port of call. Now on to Cala Santa Maria. |
