Puerto L'Estartit - 20 May to 21 May
This was a port of convenience. The weather forecast was announcing a Tramontane, a local wind that blows, according to the Pilot, for up to 60% of the year. Help. It is caused by a secondary low developing over the South of France and then funneling the winds past the alps - a sort of focusing effect. A bad Tramontane can last up to 10 days and it is "no leave harbour weather. Estartit has nothing exceptional to offer to the sailor but to the diver it is paradise. The Isle Medas are adjacent and offer great diving on both coral and caves. The place is littered with diving bottles, muscle bulging tattooed men and the female diving species who is generally slim but clearly not to be messed with!
The only solution was a day's diversion with a bus trip to Genoa. I have to say that, after Barcelona, Genoa seemed tatty and dispirited. No one seemed to be having fun or enjoying their visit. The city is undoubtedly trying but is in a poor state of repair and the only little bit with dignity is the old town and jewish quarters.
Here are a few snaps of the Cathedral (little to recommend it inside) and the alleys.

Finally, as I had 90 mins to wait for the bus I went into the Genoa Art Gallery - help not a Monet in sight let alone a Van Gough! Did find a quirky modern artist called Oyvind Fahlstrom - he is one of the artists who puts letters on the wall and then sings a tuneless song to it in mono stereo and calls it an opera!! Here is the only one I found in the least bit attractive. oyvind Fahlstrom
