Castelsadro - 10 July and 16 July 2003

Castelsardo is an old fishing port with a walled city sitting on a rocky outcrop at the harbour entrance. Its a good walk up to the walled city which was built by the Genoese as their main defensive position on the North coast of Sardinia. The old belltower of the 11th centruy church stands out particularly conspicuously.

The modern townis in stark contrast, multicoloured modern mediterranean style and equally lives on a steep incline. To get to the town from the harbour required a bike or an inflatable to cross the harbour. I chose to bike but failed on every occasion to make it to the top without walking; and I did try!

Castelsardo marina was a find however; its infrastructure is only half complete but it has all the facilities you need and it is modestly priced. I quickly changed my mind and decided to leave Walkaway here for six weeks.

I had some 5 days now before my flight so I determined to go further South West to Stintino

Left a typical historic building in the walled city and above the bell and clock tower.

In every doorway in the old town, old men and women can be seen weaving baskets, a Castelsardo speciality. Another local trade is cork, cork books, mats, ornaments; indeed anything that can be made of cork is there.
