Portoferraio, Ile d'Elbe - 22/23 June 2003

The bay in Portoferraio is massive. Nelson described it as "...for its size, the most complete harbour in the world". Napoleon spent some of his exile here and it is difficult to see why he ever left.

Also famous for the Napoleonic palindrome "Able was I ere I saw Elba".

We anchored well clear of the many ferries and, unusually I allowed crew two nights in the same place..... must be slipping.

Its fair to say that Helen and I thought Elba was a real highlight of the cruise. Whereever we went we were captivated.
