PORT
VENDRES / PERPIGNAN - 24 TO 28 MAY |
|
And here I got stuck with the worst of weather; F9 in the Gulf de Lion, heavy rain and basic yuk. Port Vendres is a working fishing port with nothing to offer at all apart from a safe haven, a shower and a bus stop. So I took myself off to Perpignan, a historic town some 30 km up the road. | |
It was Sunday but in Spain everything was open on the Sabbath and business as usual. Not in Perpignan, everything was shut. I suppose I should have guessed. Highlights if they could be called that were the Castle which one paid a modest 4 Euro to enter but that was a rip off - it was totally empty. The castle's only interest was that it was the mainland HQ for the Kings if Mallorca. |

The Cathedral and the rather fine bell tower. |

I took this picture of the palm trees in the main square of Perpignan; they rather typified the run down nature of the city. It was very dirty and unkempt, so unlike most places visited so far. The only excitement was walking with a protest march which was, as far as I could understand protesting the lack of civil facilities - they had a point! |
