Bonefacio
Old City - 5 July 2003 |

A steep climb take you up to the walled city and through the city gates. |
The streets are narrow and the building tall and again this makes photography extremely challenging. Here the cathedral tower seen between typically tall buildings. |
As previously described, the city overhangs the sea. This shot illustrates the "wing and prayer" of the city's construction. However it is only the visitor who is seemingly awe inspired. How long oh how long can you stand O Bonefacio. |
These steps were cut into the cliffs by the invading forces of the King of Aragon in 1420 during a seige of Bonefacio which must rival Malta as a heroic epic. The attackers were discovered just before they attacked up the steps and repulsed. Today you pay for the exercise of walking up and down them, self inflicted pain but very well worth the effort. |
Another in my series of quirky front doors!!
Now onwards into the Islands that populate the Bonefacio Straits. Here you seem to move between Italy and France with monotonous regularity, and changing to the right curtesy flag becomes a major planning factor; many boats get it wrong but no one seems to mind.
So onwards to the Strait and my first anchorage in Deadman's Reef. |
